Ian McKellen, who is slated to reprise his role as Gandalf in the upcoming Hobbit movies, was interviewed by Mike Regina on TheOneRing.net's BlogRadio broadcast Sunday, January 3, 2010. (The broadcast is also embedded below. The McKellen interview starts at about the 32-minute mark.)

McKellen confirmed that he has read the thus-far-completed script (See also Gandalf actor says Hobbit script written with him in mind), and that the studio took extraordinary measures to make sure the script was not leaked - it was shredded as soon as he finished reading it.
Although he is bound by a nondisclosure agreement, McKellen did express his opinion on why there is so much secrecy: "...they don't want the fans to know in advance how cunningly they wove together the various stories."
It is unclear whether "the various stories" refers to the stories that take place in and during the time of The Hobbit, or whether this refers also to the three Lord of the Rings films. Producer Peter Jackson and Director Guillermo del Toro have stated in various interviews that their goal was to make all five movies seem like one story. However, they have also said that the Hobbit movies will include details about Gandalf's activities that are not revealed in The Hobbit itself. So the weaving may have to do with Gandalf's involvement with the White Council and driving out the Necromancer (Sauron) from Dol Guldur.
