A pastor leading the fight against same-sex "marriage" in the nation's capital remains hopeful that residents in the District of Columbia will still get to vote on the issue.

The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to stop implementation of the District of Columbia's same-sex marriage law, which went into effect Wednesday. Chief Justice John Roberts issued an order, saying the high court should defer to local matters in the federal district of Washington and that a separate ballot initiative to overturn the law would give voters a chance to weigh in on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Bishop Harry Jackson is senior pastor of Hope Christian Church in Washington, DC, and Beltsville, Maryland.  He has been leading the effort for a ballot initiative and is disappointed with the Supreme Court -- but he believes there is a "silver lining."

"Roberts reviewed it himself, and he said the case has merit but that he should not at this stage overturn the lower courts and that we are going to have our day in court in May in an appeal to a higher court with our initiative, which is sort of like a city version of a marriage amendment," Jackson explains.

The DC pastor adds that the lesson Christians should learn from the DC battle for marriage is that "it's not enough just to talk about what's right and wrong." Christians, he says, need to "put politicians in council seats and Congress if common decency is going to be upheld."
