Man vs. Wild begins its fifth season tonight on Discovery Channel, and as usual for British survivalist Bear Grylls, he's visiting places much more dangerous than the local ice cream shop.

In the six episodes this season, Grylls travels to a desert island off of Papua New Guinea and visits a "shark city"; hangs out in a swampy area in the north of Australia that has more saltwater man-eating crocodiles than it has people ("I had some quite close encounters with crocs out there that may be a little bit edgy," Grylls says); traversing high mountains along the Russian border in the high mountains; HALO jumps from 33,000 feet and -55 degrees straight into 120-degree heat in Death Valley; has a close call in the Canadian Rockies, where he had to be evacuated after getting hit hard in the leg by a falling camera ("It was the first time we've ever had to call in assistance," Grylls says. "It missed my head by a matter of inches and would have killed me outright. That was a sobering reminder of the show for us"); and hosts a special "Fan vs. Wild" episode. That one Grylls is the most proud of, he says. "We had 20,000 people write in to be on the show, we picked two and I took them up to the high Canadian mountains and took them on the adventure of a lifetime. It was a really eye-opening journey for these guys. They arrived, they were fit, they were strong, but they had never done anything like this before. I gave them Man vs. Wild with the cherry on top, the whole nine yards."
Grylls also stars in the new Man vs. Wild video game coming out Nov. 16 for Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Check out a clip below for a preview of some of the gameplay.
