Church leaders at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Monroe say Pastor Lawrence Bishop was committed to rebuilding the Jesus statue before he died last week.
One of the church's leaders, Julie Hooks, says Pastor Bishop never wavered about rebuilding the statue when it was damaged last year in a fire.
"He really wanted that statue out there. Not to be worshiped, but as a beacon of hope for people so when they drive along I-75, they know that Jesus is there and he cares. There are a lot of people who came to Solid Rock Church as a result of the statue. In the end they were able to hear the message."
The new 50-foot sculpture is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
Hooks says they have a strong church and will be able to carry on after Pastor Bishop's death.
"Pastor Lawrence above all would want us to go on. He knew he was here to build up the body of Christ, and we would continue his legacy. The legacy he left behind was for us to continue to go forward. I have no doubt that Solid Rock Church would continue to go forward."
